Malkari

There is a certain species of multi-player space games which has developed a cult following over the years. Games such as Stars!, VGA Planets, and Space Empires III combine basic 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate) play with play-by-email (PBEM) modules that allow play between few or many human players, augmented by computer-controlled opponents. Weaving in and out of the nebulous clouds of shareware, these titles have relied on addictive gameplay to compensate for their utilitarian graphics. The newest entry in this sub-genre is Interactive Magic's Malkari. Set in a large asteroid belt in orbit around a twin star system, players are charged with advancing their chapter (faction or empire) from a humble beginning to a position of supreme power. The game concept will be immediately familiar to anyone who has played the aforementioned games, but execution here is different enough that some players may be somewhat bewildered on first approach.
