The Cold War strategy will be available from Matrix Games next week.
Wargames publisher Matrix Games announced on Wednesday the completion of Flashpoint Germany, a Cold War strategy game developed by Simulations Canada. Centered along the East vs. West line in West Germany, Flashpoint Germany is a turn-based, modern tactical simulation of what might have become World War 3. The game is based on an series of original wargames released on the DOS platform a dozen years ago, “Main Battle Tank: North Germany” and “Main Battle Tank: Central Germany”. As a commander of either NATO or Warsaw Pact forces, players have access to a database filled with hundreds of detailed specifications to various units and weapons, with the ability to direct air strikes, minefields, artilleries, chemical weapons, and tactical nuclear warheads. Commands are issued at the regiment or brigade level and players must manage the game's command structure to deal with the lagging effects of issued commands.

The game will be available both via digital download and mail-order CD from the Matrix Games web store. More information and screenshots of Flashpoint Germany are available on its official web site.
"The second screenshot gives an overview of the tactical map. Note the attention to detail concerning things like weather and how many radio communications you are putting out at the bottom of the screen. Also depicted is a tactical nuclear explosion, a weapon which can change the course of a battle, but with potentially disastrous strategic costs."
